Bangla govt defers decision on gas export
DHAKA, Aug. 10. The Khaleda Zia government is unlikely to take a quick decision on the politically sensitive issue of gas export to India even as a section of its policy makers feel that sell of gas would help improve investment scenario in the country.
According to reports, the government has decided to shelve the move for gas export in view of high political risk as public opinion and reaction of Opposition parties are not favorable on the issue.
Earlier, minister of state for energy Mr Mosharraf Hossain had stated that the government would take a decision on gas export by 17 August. But he was later reprimanded by his senior Cabinet colleagues for making such a statement.
A policy maker in the government said gas export was very much necessary for the country on economic grounds, but it will be a political disaster for the government if it did not seek a consensus on the issue.
